"Controlling Nanoscale Light"
Sir John Pendry, Imperial College London
Transformation optics is a new design tool that we can use to control light on the nanoscale where Snell’s law is of no use. Exact at the level of Maxwell’s equations it gives a prescription for distributing the electric and magnetic lines of force as we please.
"US Investments in Essential Photonics Technologies: The National Photonics Initiative"
Thomas Baer, Stanford University
The United Nations (UN) General Assembly 68th Session proclaimed 2015 as the International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies to recognize the importance of raising global awareness about how light-based technologies promote sustainable development and provide solutions to many critical global challenges. In line with this goal the US based National Photonics Initiative (NPI) has focused on 5 key areas where photonics is a critical enabling technology: Energy and Environment, Information Technology and Telecom, Advanced Manufacturing, Biomedicine, Defense and Homeland Security. I will discuss opportunities and challenges in these five areas currently being addressed by the scientific societies supporting the NPI.
"Light, Nano and Osaka"
Satoshi Kawata, Osaka University
Osaka is a city shined in sunset by the sun sinking into the sea of black-sea-breams. Fujiwara-no-Ietaka, well known poet in the Middle Ages, built the “Sunset Hermitage” and a popular singer Frank Nagai sung that the symbolic Tsutenkaku Tower is dyed red by the setting sun. A Glico’s famous runner figure in Dotonbori was renewed from neon-signed to LED-lit last year. Then and now, Osaka is a city of "light". And speaking of "light" sciences, it is Osaka University to be cited. I would like to talk on the old and new optical science, photonics, a cutting-edge science and technology, nanotechnology and Osaka University, Handai.
