Photonics will play a major role in reducing our environmental footprint in the near future. Photonics might be our most important tool in creating the most energy efficient and eco-friendly technologies of the 21st century. Some of the environmental benefits of photonics are the sustainable energy generation from solar energy, the reduced energy consumption, the eco-friendly design and production and the reduced risk potential.
The life cycle of a product can also be altered by the new materials created by photonics. As a result of new photonics technologies we are able to create new materials that are both biodegradable and renewable. With more research these could become cheap enough to replace the harmful materials that are currently used by most manufacturers. Photonics will play a major role in fighting the current environmental crises that are occurring right now.
